Origins

The Beginning

Built in 1890, Quinta da Bella Vista was conceived as a retreat for Portuguese nobility seeking respite from Lisbon's summer heat. The estate's romantic architecture and carefully designed gardens quickly made it one of Sintra's most coveted addresses.

The original owners spared no expense, importing marble from Italy, commissioning frescoes from renowned artists, and cultivating gardens with exotic species from Portugal's colonial territories.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

In the early 1900s, the estate welcomed its most famous resident: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes. The renowned author found inspiration in Sintra's misty landscapes and the estate's romantic atmosphere.

It was here, surrounded by ancient trees and overlooking the Atlantic, that Conan Doyle penned several of his later works. His presence left an indelible mark on the estate's character.

"Sintra has a peculiar, almost supernatural beauty that stirs the imagination like no other place on earth."— Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
